Epiphany Interviewee on Tonight Show Tonight! Booker vs. CoCo (O'Brien that is…)

Cory Booker, the uber-cool Mayor of Newark and one of my earliest interviews for my book, Epiphany, is going to appear on the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien tonight.  The two have been trading hilarious barbs after Conan made a joke about Newark, and Mayor Booker responded by putting up YouTube videos and putting Conan on Newark Airport’s no-fly list, signing off with “Try JFK, buddy.”

You can go here to read about it and how it has escalated and see the YouTube clips that Mayor Booker did and Conan’s responses – tonight’s show should be a lot of fun…

The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien is on NBC at 11:35p/10:35p Central.

Here is an excerpt from Epiphany about my interview experience with Mayor Booker…

I saw Mayor Booker speak in New York City and was blown away.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better orator.  To me, he is very much like a younger Barack Obama in presence, intelligence and spirit.  Needless to say, the man’s schedule is extremely tight.  It was quite a production to get through to him after he had graciously agreed to do the interview. Fortunately, he was able to grab a half hour to do the interview while I was in town.  Our interview was conducted in a Starbucks at a Barnes and Noble on the Upper West Side.  His 2002 turbulent race for mayor of Newark against a four-term incumbent twice his age is chronicled in the Academy Award-nominated PBS documentary, Street Fight.

Secrets…shhhhh…but we all have them…

For those of you who love browsing the bookstores on the weekends (or any old time, for that matter)…this is a great book to pick up and at least look at, if you don’t know about it already…PostSecret. There is a series of them now.  I discovered it doing research for Epiphany and am in love with it…it is a cool coffee table book, a great conversation piece and a fabulous gift for someone who likes quirky, unique things.  Frank Warren, the author, as a community art project handed out postcards to strangers and left them in public places asking people to write down a secret they had never told anyone and mail it in to him, anonymously. The response was overwhelming…and the cards are works of art…truly, it is remarkable.  The thoughts expressed on the cards range from funny to heartbreaking to frightening.  Reading and experiencing these public yet anonymous private thoughts is like touching a raw nerve of humanity, and you can’t help but think about yours and how very different and at the same time similar, all of our various journeys are… (and I bet you at least visit the notion of the card you’d send in!)  Mr. Warren is currently doing book signings for his latest book (that’s what his twitters say at least) and he is still receiving postcards from all over the world.  You can go to his website www.PostSecret.com and see/read more.  Or go pick up one of the books…I have the first one but plan to collect the series…they’re just too cool not to.

TIPS: TV/Music Launch Week, The Dr. Oz Show, Whitney Houston's Latest Album

These aren’t necessarily epiphany related subjects but I am going to start putting tips up on my blog…because tips are sort of like epiphanies – okay they’re more like discoveries about things that I think are fabulous, but you can have amazing revelations (ie: epiphanies) when you come across things that enhance your life, no? So the first tip will be about a couple of cool lauches that are happening...

The Dr. Oz Show launched yesterday – it’s syndicated so you need to check out when it plays in your area but if you like Oprah, and like seeing him and the wealth of information he shares on her show, you’ll love this show.

Dr. Oz was one of my first interviews for my book. I’ve produced several of his YOU! fitness videos that go with his books with Joel Harper and his wife, Lisa. (Joel even made me be in the Yoga video.) The Oz’s are the coolest, loveliest people and are doing such great work – they have an amazing non-profit called HealthCorps amongst all the other things they are doing. I thought this 4 minute piece on MediaWeek about the show was interesting, if you want to watch – he even mentions he’ll be dealing with epiphanies!
Also, another launch that happened this week (which is also related to Oprah oddly enough – she appeared on her show the last couple of days) is Whitney Houston‘s latest album, I Look to You – it’s been 7 years since her last studio album! I bought the album and really do love it. Especially the songs, I Didn’t Know My Own Strength (written by Diane Warren, btw, who’s committed to being interviewed for Epiphany), Million Dollar Bill and Nothin’ But Love. (I admit it – I have the strangest range of taste in music, everything from artists like Whitney and Jordan Sparks to alt groups like Bon Iver and Brian Jonestown Massacre…go figure…and if you don’t have Bon Iver, For Emma, Forever Ago / Blood Bank – RUN, go get it – I don’t know anyone who’s heard them that don’t enjoy them … immensely.)
Next tip…jeans that make you love your genes…stay tuned…

The Horse Boy Movie Opens This Weekend

I wrote about the incredible book, The Horse Boy, by Rupert Isaacson on July 30. The documentary that they were shooting as the story unfolded is now out. It is a MUST-SEE from everyone I know who has seen it. Rupert and Kristin (his wife) will be at several of the screenings. I cannot wait to see this & am very excited to say that I think it’s going to work out that I will have the opportunity to interview these amazing people! Let me know if you get to see it and what you think. www.horseboymovie.com
