Recommended Lists for New Year Happy Gifts!

And they’re primarily all books! and Yay! Epiphany is included! And what a privilege to be on the same list as these books. I love all these authors and will be getting some of these myself. I love Sarah Ban Breathnach – Simple Abundance changed my life many moons ago, and Napolean Hill? Amazing. And as you know by now, Epiphany is actually out in stores today! I can’t wait to go see it sitting on the shelf in a book store. I’m lighting out after my interviews this morning to hit stores in LA to see if it’s really there. I had Garden District Book Shop, where I’m doing my book signing in New Orleans, write me yesterday and tell me it was in and on the shelves. I almost started crying – do you think I’ll start bawling right there in the store when I see it today? Probably. Anyway, there are 2 lists below with great books and workshop suggestions to start the new year with – remember, New Year, New You… : )

The first list is in the Sacramento Bee titled, TIME OF YEAR: ADVICE APLENTY. Just hit that link and it will take you there.

The list and note below comes from Rick Hanson, the amazing author of Buddha’s Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom and many other fabulous books.

From Rick Hanson’s Newsletter:

This is Just Twelve Things: a dozen books or courses that I really value and think you might like to give as a holiday present – even to yourself.

I’ll be sending out a regular Just One Thing column in the next few days. It’s on receiving generosity – which warms the heart, keeps the circle of giving going, and flows well with this season.

Twelve times warm wishes to you,

Rick Hanson

Buddha’s Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom – How to use modern science, informed by ancient contemplative wisdom, to change your own brain for more joy, more fulfilling relationships, and more inner peace. (OK, I wrote this one, but would put it on the list even if I hadn’t!)

The Comfort Cafe – Jennifer Louden, author of the best-selling The Woman’s Comfort Book, offers a rich collection of resources each month to give women a sanctuary, support, tools and tips, and encouragement.

Depression Is Contagious – A senior psychologist, Michael Yapko, shows how relationship issues can cause depression, and vice versa, and what you can do.

2011. New Year, New You.

“New Year, New You…that is the marketing slogan that is used for this time of year,” my publisher informed me when they told me that my book was being released on January 4, 2011, and that the book was going to be part of that movement. New Year, New You. Okay.

To be honest, everything seems a bit surreal to me right now. It’s 2011, raining and cold in Los Angeles, and my book comes out tomorrow. It’s one of those times when you’ve worked so hard to get to the finish line that you look up and all of sudden, you’re there. You know that feeling? It’s sort of this slow motion, everything goes silent and still in the midst of the chaos, in a Chariots of Fire sort of way. I got back from the holidays and my shelf-ready books were waiting for me here. I started crying when I saw them. I’ve already done a few interviews that will hit this week and have many more lined up. Yes, it’s all becoming a reality that the book is finding its way into the world but I haven’t really caught up with it yet. I’m sure on Tuesday all of sudden all the noise and chaos will come right back on and I’ll be in step with it, but now I almost feel like an observer as it fast approaches.

A lot of the interviewers I’ve spoken with so far have asked me about what I’ve learned from Epiphany and these stories I’ve collected. After much thought, I realize that that is a very complex answer. It is layered and deepens, widens, changes and expands all the time. It’s almost way too much to go into in any real depth in a short interview. I’ll be interested to get feedback from others about what they’ve learned and their experience with Epiphany. I already have received some, and it’s fascinating and wonderful. But what will really be interesting is when people have time to sit with them a while and are revisiting them. Will people find them as multi-layered and rich as I have? Will they find things in them that I haven’t even discovered yet? I’ve already spoken to a few people who have brought up points that I hadn’t really focused on and it’s really exciting to discuss and learn even more from their insights.

The short answer of what I have learned from this project thus far is: I have learned a lot about forgiveness; about healing – physically, mentally and spiritually; about generosity and love; and about how important and necessary healthy self-love, self-compassion and belief in yourself are. I have learned how important it is to take action in life and to listen more closely to others and what is going on around me and to my own inner voice. I now make a conscious effort to always try to identify and face my fears and educate myself about anything that bothers me that I am unsure about, knowing I have a tendency to ignore what scares me or what might really be going on deep underneath it all and let it paralyze me from taking action. I have learned that the most extraordinary person is also ordinary and the most ordinary person among us is extraordinary – we are all both ordinary and extraordinary – every one of us – with enormous potential to make changes in our lives and help each other and the world out tremendously. I believe now that we all have important stories to tell and wisdom to share. And, most importantly, this project has renewed my faith in the human condition and our state of affairs and has given me a lot more hope and true faith in the positive aspects of life more so than the negative.

New Year’s resolutions aren’t really my thing. I usually reflect over the past year – over my journals and letters and calendar and look over what I felt, what I did, what happened, the events, the places, the people, what I accomplished, etc. And when I reflected this year, I had to smile because that whole slogan, “New Year, New You” fits. Not because I am going to set out to be a “new me” this year, but because over 2010, on accident really, I became a “new me,” or not even new but definitely changed and it was because of working with this project. So I’ve decided, during the beginning of this year, I am going to begin re-reading my book, story by story, just as I worked on them and see how they affect me now – see what I am getting from them at this juncture of my life. If you’re like me and don’t like setting resolutions and you’re going to get this book, what I’ve been suggesting is maybe reading one or two stories a day for approximately the first 2 months of the year. (There are 58 stories.) I don’t know, maybe you’ll get mini-epiphanies like I have and have an “Enhanced You,” (rather than “New You”) by the end of it, too. (And of course, I’d love to hear about your experiences if you’re so inclined to share, please!)

None of us ever knows exactly what is going to happen to us, and as we enter this new year, I find myself in one of those particularly “I have no idea what is about to happen” times, on a precipice, about to embark on a whole new journey of putting this book out in the world as a first-time author with no idea what it will be like or what is next for me…but it’s a whole new world that is exciting, scary, fun and demanding all at once, complete with a huge learning curve — what more could a girl ask for as she enters a new year?

I wish you all a wonderful 2011 – may it be a year for you and yours of joy, prosperity, fulfillment, good health and countless, amazing epiphanies!

Epiphany Book Release Date and News

Happy Holidays, Peeps who read this blog! I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving and as we head into the holidays, it is not stressful but full of fun, beauty and gratitude. I keep having people ask me about when the book is out, when they can buy it and what the deal is with it so I want to give a little low down here…

The book Epiphany is out on January 4 in stores. It is on sale now online – all the buttons to buy in various stores are on the home page of epiphanychannel.com.  You could buy the book as a gift but it won’t arrive at people’s homes until the 4th. I always say it is a perfect gift item, especially for this time of year because people will get it right at the start of the new year and there are 58 epiphany stories in the book so they could read one every day for the first 2 months of the year.  If you get the book and would like it signed, I can send you a signed bookplate to put in the book, just email me with your request and address, or I will be doing booksignings and parties in the following cities:

Los Angeles – January 13 6:30-9:30p

Dallas – January 27 – Border’s Preston Road – 7p

Austin  – February 4 – BookPeople 7pm

New Orleans – Garden District Book Shop (Date/Time TBD)

The new website will launch in about a week (YAY! I know there are a few of you sighing, “Finally.”) so there will be more specific info on there with location details, etc. as I get it.

Other great news is Epiphany got a great review from Booklist and is going to be featured in some fantastic magazines, including some of my favorites like Elle, Psychology Today, Health, and Spirituality and Health. There are also going to be LOTS of radio and web interviews to tune into, including NPR, so I’ll have it all in the news and events sections of the new site and will post to Facebook and Twitter close to the time, so if it’s something  you’re interested in, you’ll be able to find out what’s going on.

That’s the latest and greatest for Epiphany news! Happy holiday shopping, wrapping, partying, caroling, celebrating, ho-ho-ho-ing and all that jazz and may your season be merry, peaceful and bright…

If You Want to Have an Epiphany about Time Management…

CHECK OUT THIS BOOK!!

THE 4 HOUR WORK WEEK by TIM FERRISS

No, Tim Ferriss didn’t pay me – I’ve never met him (though his books are published by Random House/Crown Publishing which is the house my book lives in as well) but now I want to interview him about his GREATEST epiphany in life – because, goodness knows, this book is chock-a-block full (one of my steel magnolia mother’s favorite terms) of various kinds of epiphanies about how to streamline your life so you have time to do the things that make your heart sing. I cannot believe all the research he did for this – it is so specific and intense and there is SO much of it. It will help everyone from a busy entrepreneur to a professional at a company to a stay-at-home-mom. It even took me a while to read it because it’s so dense with information per page that sometimes I could only absorb a few pages at a time. And now he has a new one coming out in December:

THE 4 HOUR BODY: AN UNCOMMON GUIDE TO RAPID FAT-LOSS, INCREDIBLE SEX AND BECOMING SUPERHUMAN

Need I say more?  I’m just glad it’s not coming out the same month as Epiphany (Shameless Reminder: We’re out January 4!)

Here is Tim’s amazing Blog where you can read the latest, check out his books and get even more information on many more random things – that is how I found out about him (someone sent me a blog entry about book marketing or something) – plus he’s pretty funny. Enjoy and here’s to us all becoming the ‘New Rich’!!
