What Are Your Top 10 Favorite Quotes?

If you follow me on Facebook and Twitter and have perused my book and site, you will notice that I adore quotes of all shapes and sizes. I mean, REALLY adore. One of my favorite parts of writing my book was coming up with the quotes that titled the epiphanies and asking everyone about how they would summarize the wisdom gained or lesson learned in one or two sentences. (The one above that the people from www.simplereminders.com so graciously made up for me is how I summarize what is now my greatest epiphany in life.)

Quotes can be such powerful, bite-size pieces of great wisdom or even hilarity that we can easily carry around in our hearts and minds to grab onto when we really need some great advice or inspiration in a moment.

The other day I decided I wanted to start asking people about their favorite quotes – you can learn about a person by knowing this bit of information as well as gain some great quotes for your own repertoire! So, I started thinking about which quotes would go on my list at this time in my life. There are definitely more than 10 – I actually got the list down to 17 (a random number, I know, but who’s counting?) Here they are in no particular order or preference:

1.)  This too shall pass. ~ Anonymous

2.)  To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson or Bessie Stanley – you can read my short blog on this here.

3.) “You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

4.) Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

5.) Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower, we will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind… ~ William Wordsworth

6.) If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough.
~ Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

7.)  We are loved by Love itself. There is nothing good that we can’t do. ~ Maya Angelou, Epiphany

8.)  Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. ~ Jesus

9.) “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
~ Albert Einstein

10.) “Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.”  ~ J.M. Barrie (a little personal history about this quote)

11.) There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them. ~ Sylvia Plath

12.) When asked what surprised him most about humanity, the Dalai Lama answered, “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived. ~ The Dalai Lama

13.) “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world…as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~ Marianne Williamson

14.) Always forgive your enemies – nothing annoys them so much. ~ Oscar Wilde

15.) No man/woman is worth your tears, but once you find one that is, he/she won’t make you cry. ~ Anonymous

16.) Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined! ~ Henry David Thoreau

17.) The planet does not need more successful people. The planet desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers and lovers of all kinds. ~ The Dalai Lama

‘Tis the Season…To Get In Shape?!

Every now and again I write about things that I think are AWESOME. (And please tell me what is more awesome than this precious, stretching kitty?! Pretty awesome…) But I really want share these 3 very effective, very simple “getting in shape” discoveries/tips. In the last 4-6 weeks, I have lost about 10 lbs and I didn’t suffer! At all! Which, if you know me, is huge. I’m not a big dieter-person or a gym person. In fact, I quit the gym because of these new things I’ve discovered to help me get in better shape and have fun doing it! Can you tell I’m excited? So whether you’re into avoidance of holiday weight gain or if you have one of those new year’s resolutions things coming up OR you just want some good stocking stuffer ideas for loved ones that may be into those type of things…here you go:

1.) The 17 Day Diet: A Doctor’s Plan Designed for Rapid Results by Mike Moreno

This book poses a diet that is definitive and enjoyable has become a life-style for me and several people I know. Here’s the story behind my experience:

An actress friend of mine used this to lose 10 lbs in 17 days before a film shoot she had to do and used it to keep the weight off — and she said it wasn’t hard. So, of course, I was all over it. I bought it for my sister as a gift and got one for myself, and then proceeded not to open it and neither did my sister. Then my younger sister (yes, there are several of us) went to visit the other sister I’d bought it for, noticed and ordered it, and she and her husband proceeded to lose 10 and 30 pounds respectively. In 17 days. AND THEY HAVE KEPT IT OFF! That was it. I finally got on it and after the about the 3rd day, it was easy to do and stay on and I felt great. After 17 days, I too had lost 10 lbs and the weight has stayed off. I still have weight I’d like to lose, but this has been a great start and Dr. Moreno poses the plan where you can eat whatever you want on the weekends and stay pretty much within the lifestyle during the week. I am telling everyone about this book, and I just got his latest one to stop aging. I’ll let you know about that…in years?

2.) Pop Physique   = Ballet + Yoga + Pilates + Great Music + Beautiful, Clean, Cool Studios + Fabulous Instructors + Fun + Getting in Shape!

I stopped my gym membership and just do this and go walking/jogging or hiking sometimes, and I have dropped a size. I cannot believe the results of these classes. You do a class and feel energized and alive, not exhausted or super-sweaty, and after a few classes, I wasn’t ever really sore either — AND IT’S FUN, at least I think it is. And their DVDs are amazing too. They are so worth the investment if you don’t live in the areas where Pop Physique is located (but don’t worry they are expanding!) and I use them when I can’t make it into class. They also run specials all the time at the studios if you have a tight budget.

3.) Joel Harper DVDs – of course, I had to bring these up – I helped produce them! (and I’m even in some of them.) They’re great and Joel is great and if I can do his workouts, anyone can do them – trust me –  and you get results. He’s having a big Holiday Sale right now too, so go get your deal!  Joel is also an interviewee in the Epiphany book and on this site, and his epiphany is pretty remarkable if you want to check his video out.

So there you have it — only 3 simple things I have discovered that have made all the difference to this “getting-in-shape-resister-type,” just in case they may be helpful to you too…

Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season and here’s to “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” ~ and getting in shape! (NEVER thought I’d be toasting that – who knew? 🙂 ) Cheers!

Create An Epiphany: Get Honest With Yourself

I never, ever knew (or admitted) what I wanted to do when I “grew up.” My major in college was Undecided. (Yes, they actually had that as a major.) I would “accidentally” get into plays and musicals as a kid and took drama all through high school and college even though I opted never to try out for parts or ever take it seriously—probably because I was a big chicken, simply terrified that I wouldn’t get parts.

It was only when I found myself jobless in New York City right out of college that I finally had to really examine what I wanted to do in life. New York City has the best of the best of every profession operating there, and I had been interviewing, exploring opportunities, and gathering information in every field I had ever been interested in: fashion, publishing, film production, literary and entertainment agencies, public relations, Wall Street, and even politics. And I had also somehow bluffed my way into my first professional acting class—“for fun”—even though I don’t think I even knew what a headshot was at that point.

One day, while confiding in a friend that I was freaking out about all this research I was doing and still didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life and career, he said this to me:

“Ask yourself: if anything was possible in the world, there were no obstacles, no fear and nothing at all was impossible—it’s only you and God / Infinite Possibility in the world—what would you do? Write it down. That’s really what you want to do. Then, from there, you figure out how to back into it or build up to it with small steps.”

I thought, “uh-huh, whatever.” But later, I found myself grudgingly sitting there with a pad and pen, replaying that scenario over and over…“no obstacles, anything in the world is possible, no obstacles, anything in the world is possible.” Much to my surprise, when I finally took a deep inhale and put pen to paper, I had a revelation. I witnessed myself writing “ACT.” And then slowly circled it with a huge exhale. I felt such relief! Then I slowly wrote under that “BE THE CREATIVE.” And underlined it.

It dawned on me that I had been dancing around what I really wanted to do; dancing around with all the businesses surrounding the arts and acting, because I was too scared to admit that’s what I really wanted to do. What I really wanted to do was be an actorBe the creative.  I didn’t know what I’d really do about it in the moment but man, it felt great to really admit it—even to myself! I was actually a bit in awe that acting is really what I wanted to do.

Once that sunk in (and trust me, you will know if that’s what you really want—right down to your toes), the next thing was to figure out steps of how to really go about doing that—how was I going to “build up to it” or “back into it” as my friend had explained. One of the first things I did was buy BackStage newspaper, a weekly paper primarily for actors. And I went from there—acting classes, studied the business, got headshots, went on random auditions, got an agent, got into the union, started booking jobs, etc. Within a year, I was working professionally as an actress.  This path has continued to lead me over the years to other avenues in the entertainment business of producing, directing, and writing.

It hasn’t always been easy. Sometimes it’s even painful. But it’s amazing to be on what you feel is your right path. And now that I have interviewed hundreds of people about their epiphanies, I have come to believe that our hearts wouldn’t yearn for something that isn’t what we’re supposed to be doing, or that something about it won’t serve us in some way. Maybe it’s about simply taking a few steps to get there that is the purpose, but you’ll never know until you get clear and honest about what it is you truly yearn for. A wonderful teacher of mine always says, “If not now, when?” If. Not. Now. When.

“GET HONEST ABOUT WHAT YOU TRULY WANT” EPIPHANY EXERCISE

If it were just you and God /Infinite Intelligence / your higher self (or whatever you want to call pure possibility / creativity / love) – and there is no fear, no lack, and there are no obstacles, no commitments, no responsibilities or obligations blocking you—if ANYTHING is possible—what would you do?  It can be anything, from backpacking through Europe; meeting a soulmate; climbing a mountain; becoming a farmer, an actor, a doctor, a writer, a race car driver, the mayor, the president, a scuba diver; planting a garden; moving across the world or across the street—whatever—but what is it, really? What would you do? Where would you live? Who would you be?

Think about or meditate on this question with a pen and a piece of paper in front of you and be open to being absolutely honest with yourself.  It will come to you. And then, Write It Downit’s only for you, no one else has to ever see it, you might even throw it away later—but write it down. Write down what is really, truly in your heart when you answer this question.  Whatever it is may surprise you…but when you answer truthfully, it is such a relief. And then sit with it for a bit. Absorb it. And, beginning with what you truly want—start backing into it. Start by writing down the smaller, attainable steps that will build toward your ultimate goal. Take the steps. Even one baby step every week or month. It doesn’t matter. Just move. Take action. And then watch the world conspire to support you.

Believe in your epiphanies. Believe in yourself. Take Action. Watch the world conspire to support you.

Like I said, you don’t have to share. But if so inclined, you are more than welcome to let the world know who you are, who you’re becoming—what you really want—in the comments below or on my Facebook page or Twitter. I’d love it.

Epiphany of a Yogi: The Guru In You

“I woke up. I realized that the goal was not to find a guru, but to find me.”
~ Brian Leaf

From the very beginning, yoga captured my heart. Especially a style called Kripalu Yoga. In a Kripalu yoga class I felt at home, like I had full permission to be me. So, when our guru, Amrit Desai, was asked to leave The Kripalu Center in 1994 upon accusations of abusing his power and having affairs with disciples, I was devastated. If he had mastered yoga’s postures and practices yet still committed these transgressions, what could yoga offer me?

I wanted answers, and I thought perhaps Oskar, my very first yoga teacher, could provide them.

I travelled to visit Oskar. He looked just as I remembered him: relaxed smile, comfortable white clothing, big beard, sandals. I told him about Kripalu yoga, the news about Amrit, and my disillusionment. While Oskar answered my questions, I noticed that his eyes were half closed, and I remembered that three years earlier, a friend who was doing a research paper on enlightenment had told me that an enlightened person is so relaxed that their eyes are always half closed.

I was elated. I had done it. I had found my new guru. He was enlightened, and better than in a fairy tale, he had been my very first teacher.

As our visit was coming to a close, I told Oskar, “I’ll be in town for a few days, and would love to attend your class.” I could just see it, lead disciple returns to the master, like Luke returning to Yoda, Harry returning to Dumbledore.

But instead of inviting me to join his class, instead of asking me to be a disciple, instead of donning me with a Sanskrit name right there and then, Oskar said, in his unmistakable baritone that made his guided relaxations so velvety, “Brian, I’d love for you to come to class, but I just had cataract surgery, and the doctor won’t let me teach for another two weeks. Plus, with these darn drops in my eyes, I can barely see.”

And actually, I was not disappointed. I woke up. I had an epiphany. I realized that the goal was not to find a guru, but to find me.

Brian Leaf is the author of Misadventures of a Garden State Yogi: My Humble Quest to Heal My Colitis, Calm My ADD, and Find the Key to Happiness. In this hilarious and wise tale, Leaf talks about this epiphany and many others as he embarks on a quest for health and happiness — visiting yoga studios around the country and consulting Ayurvedic physicians, swamis, and even (accidentally) a prostitute. The Nobel Peace Prizes: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know & More! Epiphany Channel exclusive with Geir Lundestad

In honor of the 2012 Nobel Prize Laureates being announced last week, we’re presenting our entire exclusive, candid interview with Geir Lundestad, the Director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, that we conducted last year when we went behind the scenes at the Nobel Peace Prize. He answers all our questions about the Nobel Peace Prize: the background and history, how the Laureates are selected, the schedule and rules, the most controversial Laureates chosen, the greatest mistakes and omissions the Nobel Peace Prize has made, the epiphanies he has had about the Peace Prize and about the Laureates themselves in his 20+ year experience, and more…

Mr. Lundestad was lovely – insightful and funny – as was everyone involved with the Peace Prize. We had a blast visiting and attending all the events and being “behind the scenes.” Mr. Lundestad and his colleagues were the consummate hosts and Oslo is wonderful.

This year the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the European Union (EU). Sometimes the Prize is awarded to organizations rather than individuals (ie: The Red Cross has won several times.) I feel fortunate to have experienced the Award Ceremony last year when 3 incredibly dynamic and inspirational women were honored.

We congratulate the 2012 Nobel Prize Laureates and wish them a wonderful and inspiring celebration in December and support the intention of the Prizes to honor the Ripple Effect of the work of the Laureates to benefit and positively affect us all.

The 2012 Nobel Prize Laureates:

The Nobel Prize in Physics: Serge Haroche, David J. Wineland
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry: Robert J. Lefkowitz, Brian K. Kobilka
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine: Sir John B. Gurdon, Shinya Yamanaka
The Nobel Prize in Literature: Mo Yan
The Prize in Economic Sciences: Alvin E. Roth, Lloyd S. Shapley
The Nobel Peace Prize: The European Union (EU)
